I have been asked to review the blue cards of Theros. Sadly, I’ve been living out of a hotel for the last couple weeks and I’ve been working 12+ hours a day so my level of thought on some of these cards may not be that great. I still managed to go to a prerelease on Sunday and as a whole I enjoyed Theros’ limited play.

Annul
Limited: 2
Constructed: 2

This card is sideboard only in most formats. Standard no longer has to worry about half the matchups being affinity.

Aqueous Form

Limited: 3.5
Constructed: 3

This card will probably see a lot of play. Making something unblockable is awesome, but scrying every time it attacks makes it phenomenal. It just comes down to what you put it on. Thassa’s Emissary loves this card in limited and it could make it into a hexproof deck in standard.

Artisan of Forms
Limited: 2.5
Constructed: 2.5

I’ve never been a fan of situational cards. This could be amazing or it could just be another Clone… Time will tell.

Benthic Giant

Limited: 3
Constructed: 1

This guy will be great in draft but I don’t see it really ever getting played in constructed. 6 mana for a 4/5 hexproof is too slow for anything other than limited.

Bident of Thassa

Limited: 4
Constructed: 2.5

Generally whoever draws more cards wins. This has the ability to let you draw a lot of cards by forcing all your opponents creatures to attack. Could be good in constructed depending in the meta. This could also be Jace, Architect of Thought 5-6 in a blue devotion deck to get Thassa, God of the Sea online.
Breaching Hippocamp

Limited: 3.5
Constructed: 2

Combat tricks are good. Combat tricks attached to a potential blocker are even better. I doubt you’ll ride this horse fish to victory very often in constructed, however.

Coastline Chimera

Limited: 3
Constructed: 2

Time will tell if this card sees play in defensive limited decks. 5 toughness may not be enough in a format with bestow and monstrous creatures running around.

Crackling Triton

Limited: 3
Constructed: 2

It’s a solid critter for 3 mana with a decent ability. This will keep your opponent on their toes during combat, forcing them to always consider 2 extra points of damage. This is also a good way to deal with most of the limited flyers.

Curse of the Swine
Limited: 3
Constructed: 3

Creature removal can sometimes be hard to come by and even harder in blue. Trading good creatures for a bunch of bears, I mean boars, is acceptable. Good set up for a Ratchet Bomb for zero.

Dissolve
Limited: 3
Constructed: 5

This is cancel with scry added and put in an uncommon slot. I’ve never been a fan of countering in limited but Cancel gets played a fair bit in constructed formats and I’m certain this will replace it. The meta will decide if this ends up being as relevant as Dissipate.

Fate Foretold
Limited: 3
Constructed: 2

It replaces itself with another card when you play it and when the creatures dies. The card text may as well have been “trigger target heroic ability.”

Gainsay
Limited: 1
Constructed: 1

I think any other counter is better than this in the current environment. Dispel in particular seems more relevant in a control mirror.

Griptide
Limited: 3
Constructed: 2

This is an instant speed time walk in limited, “Magical Christmas Land” situation with Duskmantle Seer in standard.

Horizon Scholar
Limited: 2.5
Constructed: 2

In standard a 4/4 flying for 6 isn’t good even if it does scry 2 when it enters the field. In limited it is the bomb of an unlucky blue drafter.

Lost in a Labyrinth
Limited: 2.5
Constructed: 1

This is a temporary solution that helps you look for a permanent one.

Master of Waves
Limited: 4
Constructed: 3.5

4 mana for two 2/1’s at a minimum is pretty decent. Especially since he can’t be burned out. Great in multiples and seems fun with Young Pyromancer. Someone out there is going to play counter burn with this card, and to that person I say, don’t forget to pack your Frostburn Weirds.

Meletis Charlatan
Limited: 2
Constructed: 2

This is a colored one use per turn Mirari.

Mnemonic Wall
Limited 2.5
Constructed: 1.5

Good for getting back your removal spells and to stop some of your opponents creatures from hitting you, but 5 mana is too slow for any format.

Nimbus Naiad
Limited: 3
Constructed: 2
The Bestow mechanic is decent in limited, but only a few bestow creatures will see constructed play… and this probably isn’t one of them.

Omenspeaker
Limited: 3
Constructed: 3

This is very similar to Augur of Bolas and he was pretty decent in constructed. More flexibility and reliability and less card advantage.

Ordeal of Thassa
Limited: 3
Constructed: 2.5

Drawing cards is always good. This forces you to attack to get your free Divination.

Prescient Chimera
Limited: 3
Constructed: 2

Scry is a great mechanic. At 5 mana he will see play in a lot of limited decks but I don’t forsee it being played in constructed.

Prognostic Sphinx
Limited: 3.5
Constructed: 2.5

Being able to scry 3 cards every turn is awesome. Being able to keep him from an untimely end by pitching a card is even better. I’m a little wary about his constructed worthiness.

Sea God’s Revenge
Limited: 3.5
Constructed: 2

It’s pretty expensive but it could be a blowout in a limited game.

Sealock Monster
Limited: 2.5
Constructed: 2

Its an expensive blocker that you would spend too much mana to allow it to attack unless your opponent is already playing blue.

Shipbreaker Kraken
Limited: 3.5
Constructed: 2

He will win many drafts but I doubt you will hear many constructed players talk about his prowess on the battlefield. This card will undoubtedly spur many “Release the Kraken!!!” jokes around the limited tables.

Stymied Hopes
Limited: 2
Constructed: 2

A more expensive Force Spike but you can scry. I like scry but I would rather actually counter the spell.

Swan Song
Limited: 2
Constructed: 2.5

This will be in a lot of sideboards but I doubt it will see a lot of play in the main unless the meta-game changes. The 5 new gods may make this card relevant enough to play.

Thassa’s Bounty

Limited: 3
Constructed: 2

I’ve never been a huge fan of decking my opponent. Drawing cards while putting 3 of his into the graveyard is pretty sweet but I don’t feel it’s worth 6 mana.

Thassa’s Emissary
Limited: 3
Constructed: 2.5

It’s a splashable Thieving Magpie. Bestow him onto a cheap creature with evasion and enjoy your brand new bomb!

Triton Fortune Hunter
Limited: 4
Constructed: 3

This could be awesome. Especially with the bestow mechanic. Drawing cards wins games.

Triton Shorethief
Limited: 2.5
Constructed: 2.5

He’s a 1/2 for one blue. Not very special.

Triton Tactics
Limited: 3.5
Constructed: 2.5

This will be played a lot in limited. Constructed might also run it but we will have to see if it has a place.

Vaporkin
Limited: 2.5
Constructed: 2

This is another name for Welkin Tern.

Voyage’s End
Limited: 3
Constructed: 2.5

It’s temporary removal that allows you to find a proper answer or even the win.

Wavecrash Triton
Limited: 3
Constructed: 2

This merfolk will need to be killed. He’s no frost titan but he can certainly freeze up the board.

Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver

Limited: 2.5
Constructed: 2.5

This planeswalker may find itself in a deck in constructed but in limted you will need to get her early or already be in her colors to run it.

Battlewise Hoplite
Limited: 3
Constructed: 3

Scry is such a good mechanic and being able to permanently pump your creature at the same time is awesome.

Daxos of Meletis
Limited: 4
Constructed: 3

His first 2 abilities make him amazing. Evasion in any form is good and he can potentially gain you life. The ability to cast the card is just icing on the cake. This is one of those cards that you love trying out in EDH.

Horizon Chimera
Limited: 3
Constructed: 3

This is just an all around good creature. It’s a high pick in a draft and will certainly make you contemplate choosing those colors in sealed. Part of an infinite card draw combo in standard with Archangel of Thune and Fathom Mage.

Medomai the Ageless
Limited: 4
Constructed: 2.5

It costs 6 mana. It might be too much for Constructed but its certainly playable in limited. Extra turns tend to win games.

Prophet of Kruphix
Limited: 4
Constructed: 3

This is what would happen if Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir and Seedborn Muse had a child. Always having untapped mana to cast creatures on your opponents turns seems pretty good.

Psychic Intrusion
Liimited: 3
Constructed: 2

This is a fun card and may let you steal your opponenets bomb in a draft but I don’t think I would play it in standard.

Shipwreck Singer
Limited: 3
Constructed: 2

Being able to shrivel your attackers every turn is decent.

Spellheart Chimera
Limited: 2
Constructed: 2

Having a Runechanter’s Pike stapled to a doubly evasive creature will probably be good in those colors… but more-so in constructed than limited.

Steam Augury
Limited: 3
Constructed: 3.5

Fact or Fiction is awesome. Sadly this fact or fiction is 2 colors and isn’t as easily splashable but it’s still really good.
