Welcome to my Theros set review for all things green! In this article i will be going through all the green cards as well as any green multicolored card. I will be dividing each card into two ratings, the first rating is for constructed formats and the second is for limited formats. Each card will be given a number value from 1-5 for both constructed and limited, the criteria is as follows:
1: Dont bother, not worth it
2: There are far better cards in the format, but its not the worst
3: Not a bad card, could see play
4: Overall good card to have
5: Your Staple, this card is a must have in your deck!!
So without Further ado here are the Theros Green cards:
Agent of Horizons
You do not want to play this card, there are far better three drops that fit into a Simic deck.
If you decide late in the draft you are in Simic colors this card is worth picking up. Having an unblockable creature in limited can be a great way to end a match.
Anthousa, Setessan Hero
Not worth playing, a 4/5 body with a terrible ability, being able to animate up to three lands for your opponent to pick off..
Limited: 1.5 – 2
A 4/5 for 3GG is not the worst thing you could be playing, and the ability could be useful late game with your excess mana.
Might see play in some Mono Green Side Boards to deal with flyers and still be left with a giant creature.
A giant creature that is hard to deal with that only gets bigger the next turn and can block for days!
I can not see this card seeing any competitive play, there are other, more efficient cards to deal with artifacts and enchantments (see Naturalize.
Limited: 1.5 – 2
So it’s late in the draft, the pack is getting smaller and smaller.. you see this card, you’re in green and the other cards are terrible, congratulations you have a sideboard!
This card will most likely see play in Mono green aggro decks, A 4/2 for 1GG is very aggressive and lets not forget the FLASH..WOAH.. also it has bestow – this aggressive flash creature just became a great late game combat trick.
Solid pick, aggressive creature or great enchantment, versatility!
Not worth the mana, becomes a giant 2 for 1 for your opponent late game when you’re using your spells to make him bigger
This is a solid limited card, assuming you get a hold of a few enchantments, this card can get out of control very quickly.
this card will see some play testing, for instance it gives the hexproof builds a method of digging for its creatures and enchantments.
Not worth it.
Defend the Hearth
With Fog still in the format I don’t see this card seeing any constructed play.
Will sit in your hand most of the game, and if you do end up playing it, will most likely only delay your defeat by a turn.
Fade into Antiquity
Sure exiling things is good, however at 2G and sorcery speed… nope.
Have it in the side board, you just never know when it might come in handy.
Too costly to see play in competitive Hexproof decks, too slow for aggro decks.
Decent pick up, great combat trick
Hunt the Hunter
Should see play in the side board of green aggro decks, gives you the upper hand in the mirror match
Pick it up late in the draft as a sideboard card.
Too slow, even green midrange decks would not get value from this card
Decent pick, great for ramping into large creatures or spells.
not worth playing even in aggro decks, there are much better two drops.
It’s a 2/2 for 2 (Bear) or you can Bestow it’s powers onto another creature… great 2 for 1!
Not sure how this card will play out, should see play in the sideboard against blue, could also be utilized in green aggro decks, x1 generally is slow and inefficient, however having Haste could be a game changer.
Great bomb to have for any limited deck
Nemesis of Mortals
This card has the potential to be huge, a 10/10 why not! however it would take to long for you to build up a large enough graveyard of creatures to efficiently use this card.
Solid pick up, Monstrosity 5 makes this card a huge threat in this format
There are better 5 drops in the format
Its a 4/5 for 5 and reach, great value for this format, Monstrosity 4 makes this a late game threat.
You can do better!
It’s a 3/3 body for 3, you get what you pay for with this creature.
Not worth it.
In a mono green deck this card can make a difference, worth grabbing late game.
The bestow cost is way to costly to be played in this format
The bestow is what really makes this a playable card, giving one of your creatures +3+3 and trample is great, and if they manage to deal with that threat your still left with a 3/3. Value!!
Could see play in 4 – 5 color decks as a mana fixer, or enchant an opponents land to enable your spells (Mountain walk for example)
Not worth playing unless you decide to play more than 2 colors, in which case it becomes a great mana fixer.
Ordeal of Nylea
Dont see this card seeing any constructed play, gives your opponent plenty of time to remove the creature, too slow for aggressive decks.
Not a game changer, if you’re playing 2 or 3 colors it might be worth looking at for the mana fixing.
Play something better!
Solid defender at 5 mana that can be troublesome to get through
Polukranos, World Eater
Fits into aggro decks, and midrange decks. allows full use of your mana late game to dish out some serious damage.
Amazing card for this format, huge threat that can clear your opponents board.
I really like this guy in a mono green deck, Turn 1: G creature, Turn 2: GG creature Turn 3 Reverent Hunter with +4/+4
Works really well if you’re able to go mono green, gets exponentially worse with each additional color of creatures you play.
Could see some play in Gruul aggro decks as it works well with Burning-Tree Emissary and can get some big threats out earlier.
Not a terrible card to have if you’re playing Gruul can help ramp you in the early game.
Not worth playing in a constructed format.
Could be used to push damage through on your opponent by forcing all his creatures to block your weakest, allowing the rest of your creatures to get through directly.
There are far better combat tricks in the format.
Definitely playable although not necessary.
It’s another 1/1 for 1 Deathtouch…
Decent blocker that can make combats awkward for your opponent.
Might be seen in a sideboard or two to deal with pesky flyers, but overall not worth it.
There is a high number of flyer creatures in Theros, this makes for a great sideboard addition.
Not fast enough for constructed formats.
Theros is packed with enchantments and Bestows that make this guy very dangerous.
This card will see lots of play in any multicolor deck running green, with the tap lands rotating out this card becomes very useful.
Great addition 0/3 wall that stops a lot of early creatures and the mana ramp is very useful.
Time to Feed
An expensive Pit Fight with a terrible 3 life gain added, nope.
With very limited removal in Theros this card has the potential to be very useful.
Although it’s not a 1 drop mana dork, being able to untap any type of land can prove quite useful.
Not a bad addition to a multicolored deck, mana fixing is always good.
There is always that one common green creature in a set with trample that costs way to much to see play in a constructed format.
There are better cards in the set to be picked over this, however its not the worst.
A very situational card, you need to have two unblocked creatures to get full value out of this card, and if your board is empty it’s a dead card.
I have the same issues here, too situational and could be dead in hand.
Chronicler of Heroes
A 3/3 for 3 with an ability that I don’t see triggering all that often, there’s far better cards in Selesnya: Loxodon Smiter for example.
Its a 3/3 for 3 if you’re playing Selesnya it’s a good addition.
This card should be in every Gruul sideboard without question, with the addition of Bestow (Enchantment Creatures) in Theros this card can deal with alot of threats and still burn your opponent.
Great card to have for this set with the large number of enchantments.
What’s not to like here.. a 3/3 for 2 that becomes indestructible and Hexproof. Difficult for your opponent to recover once this Cat becomes Monstrous
There might be a spot for this card in some kind of Simic build, but overall a forgettable card.
Good card to pick up if you find yourself in Simic colors. Flash is a great mechanic.
At five mana this card really does not pack the kind of punch you would want.
Has the potential to be really good, assuming your opponent killed one of your big threats this gives you a second chance with it.
With the addition of so many enchantments in this set this card is a powerhouse, and it slides right into Gruul aggro, plus it has Monstrosity!
Can steal the game in some cases, with the high number of enchantments and if this guy goes monstrous it can put your opponent on the ropes.
Prophet of Kruphix
This card has an incredible ability, effectively doubling your mana for use on creature cards. play him turn 5 then flash in a another 5 drop on your opponents turn.
A must have for this format, pump out creatures and Overwhelm your opponent.
Reaper of the Wilds
This card is very versatile. being able to make it Hexproof and Deathtouch at cheap costs. Great 4 mana creature for Golgari.
This card can be one heck of a pain to deal with and makes combat hard for your opponent.
Xenagos, the Reveler
Should see play in a variety of decks because all three abilities make this fit into different builds. Pumping out 2/2 haste creatures is a great way to pressure an opponent. Ramping with his +1 ability to drop more threats also seems effective.
Great card to pick up, has to ability to protect itself by pumping out tokens as well as the great mana ramping, not to mention his -6 which has the potential to put your opponent on the brink of defeat.
